Terminology:
Sustainability;
Defined as meeting the needs of a resource today without compromising availability in the future.
Renewable Resources;
A natural resource can be replenished or is renewable. For a resource to be sustainable, consumption of the resource in question should never exceed rate of replenishment. Peat-Moss is used in a far less amount than replenishment hence considered a renewable resource
Non-Renewable resource;
Any resource that is present in a fixed amount and cannot be replenished. These resources will be depleted as they get used.
Bio-Plastics;
Manufactured from resins derived from renewable resources unlike traditional plastics that are petroleum (non-renewable) based. A bio-plastic used by Jiffy on the 100% biodegradable Speedypot plant container is PLA, derived from cornstarch. The Jiffy Speedypot is DIN-CERTCO certfied compostable.
Biodegradable;
A product is said to be biodegradable when it has the ability to break down into the raw materials of nature and disappear harmlessly back into the environment. Generally biodegradable matter is organic, whereas synthetic materials made from inorganic sources are not biodegradable.
Compostable;
Biodegradable and compostable are almost synonymous except for the fact that compostable refers only to the solid materials that degrade into nutrient-rich materials such as mulch or soil enrichment additives. There is made a difference between Home-Composting and Industrial Composting. Industrial composting applies the same principles of home composting except on a larger scale using heat and mechanical mixing technology to speed up the composting process.
